Our Vision

We are a national partnership of people with disabilities, parents, and family members who work to promote federal policies that support the five principles of Self-Determination. The five principles are

  • freedom,
  • authority,
  • support,
  • responsibility,
  • confirmation of the essential role of self-advocates,

and the values of the Community Imperative - a declaration asserting the fundamental human right of all people, regardless of the severity of their disabilities, to community living.

Our vision is for people with disabilities, parents, and family members  to work together as partners to affect policies at the national level which enable people with disabilities to:

  • have the freedom to exercise the same rights as all citizens, including the right to live in the community.
  • have the authority to control whatever resources are needed for one's own support.
  • have the supports to live, work, and play in the community, regardless of the severity of their disability.
  • have the responsibility of meaningful input in shaping the direction of their own lives.
  • acknowledge and confirm the contribution of self-advocacy to the leadership of the system.
What we do
  • Work with other national disability organizations and federal officials to promote self-determination and community living for all individuals with disabilities.

  • Testify before, and meeting with, state and federal officials to educate the principles of self-determination and to support initiatives aimed at ensuring community living for all individuals, regardless of the severity of their disabilities.

  • Partner with individuals with disabilities, parents, and family members in pursuing the NConSD vision.

We strongly believe that individuals with disabilities must be given the opportunity to be involved in all decisions that affect the services and supports that they receive.

NConSD is active at the national and state level and works in support of three key principles:

  1. Promoting the five principles of Self-Determination - freedom, authority, responsibility, support, and confirmation.
  2. Countering the prevailing attitude that some individuals with disabilities are so disabled they can only be served in congregate facilities or institutions; and
  3. Seeking input from individuals with disabilities on issues related to self-determination and community living.
